Bananas are among the most popular fruits in American kitchens, but they don’t grow in America. Apples are as American as, well, apple pie, yet they aren’t from here either. How, then, did so many fruits, from so many far-away places, conquer the American produce stand? To answer this question, this course explores the environmental history of the food, or fruit, on your plate. From Johnny Appleseed and the CIA to the Spanish Empire and Chaquita Banana, we’ll trace the fascinating history of the fruits we eat and consider the environmental, political, and cultural consequences of their presence on our plate. Join us for a fruitful night of learning and dialogue!
